Acceptable risk and the broader landscape

The devastating bushfires in the summer of 2019/20 highlighted to many of us, the very different world we are living in, in the face of climate change, and the need to expand our thinking around bushfire risk.  The new draft State Planning Policy 3.7 Bushfire introduces a new methodology for WA that considers the risk presented by the broader landscape that surrounds a development site, and provides a framework to determine whether the risk is unacceptable and should be avoided.

Jackie has 20 years of experience in urban, regional and environmental planning working for both state and local government in Western Australia.  As the Manager of the bushfire program within the Department of Planning Lands and Heritage in Western Australia, Jackie has been leading the review of the Bushfire State Planning Policy and Guidelines over the last 4 years. After completing a Masters in Sustainable Development and the Graduate Certificate in Bushfire Planning and Management at the University of Western Sydney, Jackie continues to strive to improve her knowledge in the complex field of planning in bushfire prone areas.
