Dr. Maria Kornakova

Manager Bushfire Services, FPA Australia

Dr Maria Kornakova is Manager Bushfire Services at FPA Australia. Architect by training, Maria completed Masters degree in Urban and Regional planning as Fulbright Scholar. She successfully completed PhD at the University of Melbourne and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Melbourne and Massey University, NZ. The key focus of her research and professional interest is bushfire risk reduction practices through building, planning and architecture. Maria transferred to the industry to practically apply skills and knowledge gained over the years of her academic career and joined FPA Australia in December 2018 as Bushfire Services Coordinator and was promoted as Manager two years later.

Jackie Holm

Planning Policy Manager – Bushfire | Strategy and Engagement , DPLH

Jackie has 20 years of experience in urban, regional and environmental planning working for both state and local government in Western Australia.  As the Manager of the bushfire program within the Department of Planning Lands and Heritage in Western Australia, Jackie has been leading the review of the Bushfire State Planning Policy and Guidelines over the last 4 years. After completing a Masters in Sustainable Development and the Graduate Certificate in Bushfire Planning and Management at the University of Western Sydney, Jackie continues to strive to improve her knowledge in the complex field of planning in bushfire prone areas.

Murray Carter

Executive Director, Rural Fire Division, DFES

Murray Carter has dedicated much of his life to combatting bushfire risk in Western Australia. Starting out as a 17-year-old cadet with the then Forests Department, he spent 13 years with CALM conducting prescribed burns and fighting large scale bushfires in country WA. Mr Carter then took on the role of CEO for Lord Howe Island, leading marine and land management, before returning to WA and working in policy positions with the State Government. He dedicated five years to the role of Fire Manager for the then Department of Parks and Wildlife, and more than three years as Director of the Office of Bush-fire Risk Management (OBRM) leading key reforms in rural fire man-agement at the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. The current Chair of the Australasian Fire and Emergency Services Authorities Council (AFAC) Rural and Land Management Group, Mr Carter is also a member of the National Forest Fire Management Group, is on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Wildland Fire (IAWF), and is the current (inaugural) Chair of the WA State Bushfire Advisory Council.

Richard Trinh

Program Manager, DFES

Richard is a passionate town planner, having spent 10 years in town planning roles within private, local and state government. After starting as a Senior Land Use Planning Officer at DFES in 2018, he has moved onto managing the Map of Bush Fire Prone Areas. Although he has expanded his knowledge into geospatial information systems and project management, he remains passionate about town planning and continues to actively follow changes to keep in touch with the WA planning system. Richard has been updating the Map of Bush Fire Prone Areas and is the current Acting Director Land Use Planning at DFES.

Mark Riordan

Principal Building Surveyor, DMIRS

Mark is currently a Principal Building Surveyor within the Standards Branch (Building and Plumbing) of  Building and Energy (DEMIRS).

He is building industry trade qualified with Qld builders registration, is a Central Queensland University Graduate, a registered Level 1 Building Surveyor Practitioner and has a diploma in town planning.

Mark has been a part of the QLD and WA building industries for around 38 years, with the last 17 seeing him hold senior building surveying and leadership roles in the public sector.

Paul da Costa

Audit Manager, Principal Building Surveyor, DMIRS

Paul is currently acting as Audit Manager in the compliance directorate of Building and Energy (DMIRS).

He is a registered Level 1 Building Surveyor Practitioner with post graduate qualifications in fire safety engineering.

Paul has been a part of the WA building industry for over 35 years, with the last 15 seeing him hold senior building surveying roles in the private and public sectors.
